It was a good day Morning coffee You made it just the way I like I started thinking you might let it slide It was a good day Finally got paid $240 bucks even though I know that's not enough It was good day With the stereo on in the truck And they were playing my favorite song So I rolled the knob I turned the speakers up And Chuck Prophet was singing All about the summer time thing I was puffing on something green Til the spirit came washing over me It was a good day We beat the rain home I had a mexican popsicle And I wrote this song I wrote this song so sing along like Na, na na na na Na na na na na na Na na na na na na It was a good day Front porch swing I wasn't doing much of nothing But feeling ok today It was a good day The sun was shining I saw the clouds roll in I didn't pay it no mind Wasn't trying to go nowhere today I was just waiting On a friend of mine to stop by I had a little something that needed to reply On the telephone I tapped the message out They sent the money and like splat I was back out Feeling like I was gonna drop like the rain That was falling on the sidewalk flooding your name I was rolling down the road trying to feel no pain I wasn't braving no shame I wasn't making no money Trying to hold onto Baby roll for me honey I'm your ride or die You know I'm a try But I'm gonna let it rip When I get on the mic We roll together We're like family It's you and me darling Til the end of the scene like Na, na na na na Na na na na na na Na na na na na na (fade out)

Come on now baby take that medicine You know you wanna but you can't forget Hard times are coming better lock up your doors Roll down the windows and I'll nail down the boards It's going down you can feel it We're going looking for hard times On the radio, every time I turn on my favorite show They're saying hard times Hard times are here again They're here again Come here sunshine, let me in I'm your little rain cloud don't you fret again Hard times are coming, that's what they say But you and me darling we're gonna be ok We're gonna hold on We're gonna hold on When it comes down to the minute Baby hold me now for a little bit And just slide We gotta hold on We gotta stick together We gotta ride strong We're gonna live forever We gotta hold on Don't you know we gotta hold on

Easy Friends 02:19
Easy friends Easy friends Wish that I was five again Thinking summer would never end Easy friends Easy smiles At the pool When you're old you're such a fool You forget what you knew back then Easy friends Easy friends Easy smiles Wish I could roll back the miles Once you leave you can never come back again Easy friends

I ain't looking for a hard time baby I've been looking for the bright lights again I ain't looking for a fight baby lately So you can wander down and find some other man I ain't looking for a hard time I ain't looking for a hard time I've been looking for a hard time baby I've been wondering where'd you go? I've been swallowing all my pride lately I've been wandering down the dark end of the road I've been looking for a hard time I've been looking for a hard time I ain't looking for a hard time I ain't looking for a hard time I been looking for a hard night's sleep You sharpen the knife That cuts so deep I've been looking for the end of the road For my aching heart And my heavy load From that hard time And I ain't looking for a hard time I ain't looking for a hard time time

Relax your mind Relax your brain For a little while We can go insane We'll be alright By the time it rains Roll off your brain now Relax your mind for a little while Unclench your jaw Breathe down deep Feel the earth below Flow through your feet We will be right By the time it ends Don't be afraid child This is only the beginning You are the love inside You are the love inside You are the love inside of me I am the love inside I am the love inside I am the love inside of you

about

Inspired by a beloved vintage drum machine that provided the pulse for several songs on the album, This Machine is the one man recording project of singer/songwriter Patrick Coman.

A former hard touring solo performer, Coman left music behind seemingly for good during the early days of Covid as he focused on his day job as a radio DJ and producer and navigating the ins and outs of virtual learning for his two young children.

After nearly three years away from music the same Rhythm Ace drum machine that inspired artists like J.J. Cale and Sly and the Family Stone began to coax song ideas out of Coman as well. Playing lap steel and electric blues riffs over the hypnotic drum loops for hours eventually led to new sonic terrain and new methods of songwriting. Narrative story-driven lyrics were swapped out for stream of conscious improvisations. Folk and roots music were supplemented with dashes of New Wave rhythms, feedback-laden guitar solos, and lo-fi hip hop beats.

The songs themselves recall the emotionally draining ups and downs of the past three years of American life. Hushed late night conversations, moments of fear and panic, and predictions of doom are balanced out with simply joys. Popsicles on the front porch. Sprinklers on a hot day. Long awaited pay days. Lazy summer afternoons. A rich interior life.
